Number, period, population: every figure with its source and cutoff date, changes in absolute and percentage terms, and a plain note on what the data cannot show.

• Establish the dataset before any number: publisher, table, period and what is counted, such as sales, registrations or the tested model year.
• Compare like with like. Flag disagreements between sources or totals instead of smoothing them over, and build tables readers can recalculate.
• Name the limits: a ranking is not a quality verdict, a rating applies to the tested configuration, and one month is not a trend.
