Start with the garage, not the shopping filter
Two chargers can advertise similar power and still lead to different installation jobs. One plugs into a compatible receptacle; the other connects directly to the electrical installation. The useful question is what works at your actual parking space, at the power your car can use, during the hours you are home.
This is a US buying guide based on public technical guidance and manufacturer documentation. We have not run a product endurance test. The calculations below are our own illustrative arithmetic, not measured charging sessions or an installation quote.
What hardwired and plug-in actually describe
These terms describe the charger's connection to the building. They do not identify the vehicle connector, guarantee a particular output or make a device portable. You still need the correct vehicle-side connection and a mounting arrangement approved for the particular charger.
A concrete example is ChargePoint's installation FAQ for Home Flex models CPH50-NEMA6-50-L23 and CPH50-NEMA14-50-L23. It lists plug-in charging at 32 amps on a 40-amp circuit or 40 amps on a 50-amp circuit. Its 48-amp configuration requires hardwiring and a 60-amp circuit. Hardwiring also supports lower settings. These are model-specific manufacturer requirements, not permission to choose circuit protection yourself.

A useful shortlist for four common situations
Our recommendation is to compare installation options under the same assumptions, including the same cable reach and required daily charge.

How much time does 48 amps really save?
Use energy and available time rather than advertised miles per hour. In this simplified example the supply is exactly 240 volts and the vehicle accepts the full output continuously. At 40 amps, power is 240 × 40 ÷ 1,000 = 9.6 kW. At 48 amps it is 11.52 kW. Both are ceilings for the assumed setup, not promised session averages.
Suppose the session must deliver 30 kWh measured at the wall. Dividing energy by power gives about 3 hours 8 minutes at 9.6 kW and 2 hours 36 minutes at 11.52 kW: roughly 31 minutes saved before rounding. With an eight-hour overnight window, both fit comfortably into this example. With a much shorter window, that difference can matter.
The 30 kWh here is wall energy, not energy added to the battery; charging losses mean those quantities differ. If the car instead limits AC charging to 7.2 kW, both installations take about 4 hours 10 minutes for the same wall-energy amount in this simplified calculation. A more powerful box cannot remove the car's limit. Real voltage, power sharing, battery conditions and the charging schedule can change the result.
An existing outlet is a starting point, not a verdict
The Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels Data Center recommends checking electrical capacity and applicable local requirements. EV charging is a continuous load; the electrician needs to assess the installation for that use. Permits and local approval can apply. A receptacle previously used for another appliance does not answer those questions.
The US Fire Administration recommends certified equipment and a qualified electrician, and warns against using a damaged charger. A plug-in arrangement still needs professional assessment. If protection repeatedly trips, have the cause investigated instead of treating a protective device as an inconvenience to bypass.
Before requesting quotes, photograph the parking space and note where you normally stop the car. Record the distance to the proposed charger position and which side holds the vehicle inlet. You can collect that information without opening electrical equipment. Give the installer the exact charger model and its current installation manual.
Compare the complete quote, including what happens later
ChargePoint names location, distance from the panel and the home's electrical supply as factors in installation cost. That is why we do not attach a nationwide dollar saving to either connection type. Ask for itemized local quotes and compare what they include.
Our suggested checklist is: equipment and mounting, the circuit and wiring route, any receptacle and outdoor enclosure, required protection, permits, inspection and commissioning. Have the electrician identify what is essential now and what is only preparation for a later car or second charging space. A proposal for more capacity should say which need it solves.
For replacement or a move, ask who removes the equipment, what must remain at the property and what a future installation would need. Plug-in does not mean every compatible-looking outlet elsewhere is suitable. Hardwired does not mean a failed charger requires replacing the entire electrical installation. Neither future cost should be assumed without a defined scope.
Certification and compatibility are separate checks
Check safety certification for the exact model rather than relying on a marketplace description. ENERGY STAR says its certified EV chargers are also safety tested by a nationally recognized testing laboratory, and its product finder provides a place to check listed models. Energy efficiency, electrical safety and vehicle compatibility answer different questions.
For your shortlist, separately confirm the vehicle connector, usable AC output, outdoor suitability where needed, cable reach and behavior without an internet connection. Also decide whether scheduling belongs in the car, the charger or a utility program. Buying two overlapping scheduling systems can add confusion without adding useful charging time.
Our recommendation: buy the installation you can explain
A plug-in charger belongs on the shortlist when a professionally checked receptacle is well placed and the supported output meets your needs. For a new installation, request a hardwired alternative before paying to add a receptacle solely for charging. There is no universal winner on cost or convenience.
Before buying, you should be able to explain three things in plain language: how much energy you normally need overnight, why the proposed electrical work is sufficient, and how the cable reaches the car in daily use. Once those are settled, compare devices and purchase terms. The highest number on the box is a poor substitute for those answers.
